Aldgate Pump

This rather angry fellow is actually Aldgate Pump. There has been a pump here for centuries, here is a picture of it still in use in the 20's. As with a lot of London water sources, this pump was associated with a vicious outbreak of disease, that killed around 200 in this instance. Another picture here

Well, if you will drink from a lamb's head I'm afraid you will get ill!

One of the more interesting things about this is that the people in the 1920s picture are probably dead now and the lamb's head is still here. That has to say something about mortality.

Talking of drinking, and The Lamb, after you've looked at the pump, pop down the road and call in here: http://www.pubs.com/pub_details.cfm?ID=205

Ham,
I never thought of pumps associated with disease as being ornamental like this. I think it is quite nice, and I appreciate the historic photos presented along with your contemporary one.

Hey, surprise! I've tagged you and now you're it! Please visit my Wednesday post to see what to do,
