Have you forgotten?

Shot with Olympus E510

I'm going to end remembrance week with a mention of PC Yvonne Fletcher, whose claim to immortality is that she was murdered, and that sparked off a major diplomatic incident with Libiya. These day when police are regularly shot and killed on London streets, I wonder if it would have caused such a fuss. But then it was still shocking. This small plaque in St James Square commemorates her.

Murder is always shocking of course but it depends who is murdered. We seem to be stunned with some figurehead like Martin Luther King is murdered but a murder on the street is only passing news in the newspaper but to the parents it is horror of the worst kind.

That man came from ancient history where murder by sword was as common as those invaders who carried them, to a peaceful coexistence, was something like Heaven might be. Then, it must have been shocking to find someone murdered on the street as was the case you cited. Amazing that times have changed so much.

Rather oddly we haev the film directory Michael Winner to thank for this memorial.

It was he who helped to raise the money and get it placed close to where Yvonne was shot.

He later went on to ensure memorials were placed for other fallen police men and women. The National Police Memorial in The Mall records over 1,600 officers killed on duty.
